Alice’s Beauty Salon NEVER GO THERE

June 15th, 2006

I have been going to Alices Beauty Salon (8750 Sw 72nd St Miami, FL 33173-3512 (305)271-0311) for over 2 years now. I went in today to get my eyebrows waxed, and that women ruined them so badly that I now have a patch of hair missing at the end of my left brow. There is no reason in the world these people should be in business. Then to put the icing on the cake the CHEAP GROSS WOMAN, Alice, who owns the salon wanted to charge me the full amount for the AWFUL work, then she so graciously offered me a TWO DOLLAR discount. I gave her the money and I swear that is the very last time she will ever receive any amount of money from me! The beauty business demands people skill and that woman has no business running a salon.

Razzberry Lips

April 28th, 2006

This new store Razzberry Lips at Westgate Mall is by far the best place we’ve ever had our daughters birthday party. The girls had the best time ( at a Makeover Party) and each parent told us it was also wonderful! They do makeovers, dance , karaoke and play games! Also they sell really cute stuff.

Little Swiss House is a Treasure and a Wonderful Store!

April 3rd, 2006

Little Swiss House is a gem among chain stores – I beg to differ.
Both Barbara Soifer and her husband Bob Amaral are the most personable
and courteous jewelry (or other!) store operators I have ever encountered.
They remember you, greet you, offer you candy and treats, and talk at length
to you about where your item came from, etc. I find their prices to be very fair,
and many times, Barbara has given me a great cut in price. The place is just as
welcoming as it is immaculate and sparkling.
I can’t recommend shopping there enough.
Lastly, not only has Barbara distinguished herself by operating a beautiful
small business for so many years and for continuing a family business that began
in Scollay Square, Boston, but she has been very active in Brookline town affairs.
I knew of her long before I ever went into the store. She has run a Cable TV
show interviewing lesser-known local talents for many years. She began town
festivals such as “First Light Brookline”, the Washington Square Fair and the
Music Fair, and she orchestrated the placement of the beautiful Victorian clock
that graces Washington Square. These are only a few of the things I read about
her accomplishments before I ever met her. She has also been very active in
the Chamber of Commerce.
I’m not sure why this particular writer had such bad things to say about the
Little Swiss House. Perhaps she had some issue of her own to grind. I myself
could not say a bad thing, and in fact can say nothing less that fantastic things,
about the LSW and its proprietors. Aside from the gems in their showcases,
they themselves are the real local treasure.

Homeowner Beware: Get it in Writing!

February 22nd, 2006

It should be your priority as a homeowner to have “all” things in writing by anyone doing work on your home or business. I am a painting contractor in Metro Boston and just went through a small claims case with a roofing contractor. The roofing contractor I hired left one letter out of the contract and it cost me his final payment, an additional $2400 for another contractor to finish the shoddy work and attorney fees. Believe me, take my word and “get it in writing!” I lost the case in small claims for one letter of the alphabet! I do estimates all the time and have a great relationship with my clients, but for their protection and mine I have been very careful to complete each item line by line. I write this with hope that all will hear me clearly. Your contractor might be great, but for your protection request it in writing.

Cambridge Landscape – Get it in writing first!

December 1st, 2005

When dealing with contractors of any sort, always remember the cardinal rule:
Get an estimate in writing, first!

In early October, I had a tree limb stuck on some wires. I called Cambridge Landscape, and within a couple of hours the estimator was there to take a look at it. He said the job wasn’t a big deal, and he would only charge me “the minimum”. When I got the bill (six weeks later), it was for $360, or about double what he led me to be believe.

Now maybe $360 was a legitimate bill for the work done, but I felt ripped off, especially because the estimator really played down the cost. Caveat Emptor

Charles Matter, Boston Photographer

October 29th, 2005

This is regarding the services of Charles Matter, wedding photographer operating out of Boston, MA. My wife and I paid him to shoot our wedding on 10/5/02. He delivered where the pictures were concerned in taking the pictures and giving us the proofs.

However, when we (as well as my parents) paid him to assemble albums all we got were excuses for 6 months. He claimed to have lost my parents’ shot list, and told my wife and I that our album was in various states of construction in the bindry. He eventually ceased communication altogether in not returning emails and phone calls in May 2004.

I threatened to take him to small claims court, and still no response. I took him to small claims court in August 2005, won (he defaulted), and am now in the process of having a constable haul him into court to explain how he will repay me. After he defaulted in court, I followed up with some emails pleading with him to do the right thing, refund us, and allow us to put this behind us. He did not respond.

In August 2005, I posted a negative referral and my father posted a negative referral of his business on respond.com. Before Charles Matter wrote rebuttals in an effort to discredit our referrals, he spent a lot of time on the phone with the webmasters of respond.com in an unsuccessful bid to get my posts removed. I know this because I was required to demonstrate the veracity of my claim that I had taken him to small claims court. When I faxed the documents to the webmaster, I was told that Mr. Matter was frantically trying to prevent my referalls from remaining on the site. In his rebuttals, he attempted to extend the amount of time that my wife and I took to order our album in order to pave over the time he actually spent making lame excuses for the progress of our album. In his statement that he is awaiting my parent’s shot list, he is partially correct: he lost my parents’ first shot list and after all the lame excuses, my parents stopped trusting his process. They wanted to see if my wife and I got our albulm before drawing up another shot list and sending it to him. We did not receive our albulm or a response to our manyvoice mails and emails.

In October 2005, a negative referral appeared in respond.com for Charles Matter that was very similar to my referral down to each detail. It was followed with an immediate rebuttal from Charles Matter where he accused me of “further slandering” him by making this “fake” post. I called respond.com to refute that I had written this post and declared that it was my belief that Charles Matter was attempting to slander my good name in having posted this himself. They removed the post and the rebuttal.

My wife and I do not wish for any other couple’s wedding memory to be tarnished as my wife’s and mine have been. If you want to see for yourself, try calling Charles Matter’s phone number (617-541-4060). You’ll find that he never answers the phone. This has been the case from the very first time I contacted him about taking on our wedding in early 2002. Why is that Charles? Are you afraid of having to speak with other disgruntled customers?

Don’t use Hills Plaza Cleaners!

Unless you want your dry cleaning lost, no apology and lots of attitude! It amazes me how organizations can get away with such apalling customer service.

Stay Away from Computronics on Wilshire

June 1st, 2005

I would like to share an unfortunate incident with a Mr. Steve Rafizadeh at Computronics at 11755 Wilshire Blvd.

I found myself in need urgently of a IDE Raid controller. I contacted several local computer equipment stores with no luck. Mr Rafizadeh at Computronics stated that they had the product in stock and the price was $59.95 (the going rate for a quality model via internet ordering). He asked to call me back after he confirmed they had the product in stock. I waited till they called me back to confirm they indeed had it in stock and sent someone to pick it up. What we got was a cheap knock off in an open box that he charged $69.95 for instead of the price he quoted over the phone. It was installed and after 30 minutes had only successfully copied 1% of the drive and in the process corrupted the master drive I was trying to mirror. I called the store and asked how late they were open and spoke with Mr. Rafizadeh and was told another 30 minutes until 7pm. Upon my arrival in 15 minutes I found the store closed and Mr. Rafinzadeh hung up on me twice when I called the store number and refused to so the right thing and take the defective bait and switch hardware back.

Stay clear of this business and this man. Quality and service are not part of their business model.

Termini Brothers Bakery will rip you off

May 3rd, 2005

I would like to warn everyone to stay away from Termini Brothers bakery in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. I phoned in an order in advance to be picked up on Christmas Eve. When you preplace orders you pay in advance. When I arrived to pick up my order, it was not around. I was told for 3 hours that my order was on the truck which was on its way from the main store. I was also told that since it was in transit I was not allowed a refund, nor could I get something else to make up for amount of my money that they had no problem taking a week in advance. So as I stood in the store on Christmas Eve for 3 hours waiting for a mysterious missing truck to appear I waited for an apology for my inconvenience. This also never arrived. I will tell you what I did get, a whole lot of attitude. Oh yeah and just as the store was closing I was finally allowed to select from the handful of items that were left after the Christmas rush to make up for my missing pastry trays. I ended up with an apple tart and some cookies to feed 30 people over 2 days. Great service from a company that prides itself on customer satisfaction. They succeeded in satisfying me that I was ripped off with attitude. Be warned!!

Kendall Drugs in Cambridge closing

April 29th, 2005

After more than 50 years in the heart of Kendall Square, Kendall Drugs is closing. It was a great family run convenience store and pharmacy. Apparently the landlord (MIT) has other plans for the space and didn’t renew their lease. Such a shame.

Until the end of the month they have extensive discounts (40-60%) on all remaining items. Ice cream is 40% off.

This Zami site is great!

April 20th, 2005

I have never seen this site before. How long has it been around? I have been online for years and have my own site, but new to Blogs etc.

I looked at support, but there is quite a bit there and I’m looking for simple instructions on how to participate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Café Cláve

July 10th, 2004

Ran into this nice cafe in University City yesterday. It’s called Café Cláve on 4305 Locust Street in Philly. I was drawn to it by the music coming out the door, which turned out to be old Cuban music. A nice homey atmosphere with good coffee, comfortable sofas, great pictures of old Havana and album covers decorating the walls. I’m told they have live Latin music on Saturday evenings.
